FAQs
Confidentiality and Private Policy
The law protects the confidentiality of the relationship between a client and psychotherapist, and information cannot be disclosed without the client’s written consent.
There are, however, legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality. These include situations involving suspected child abuse, dependent adult abuse, or elder abuse, which must be reported immediately to the appropriate authorities as required by law.
Confidentiality may also be broken if a client poses a serious threat of harm to another person. In such cases, I am required to take reasonable steps to notify law enforcement and, when appropriate, inform the intended victim.
If a client presents a risk of self-harm, I will work collaboratively to support their safety and seek their cooperation in developing a safety plan. If necessary, and when cooperation cannot be obtained, I am legally and ethically obligated to take additional protective actions without client consent to help ensure their safety.
